Buy the coin, not the slab.

By Ted Nelson

Here is an example of yet another vastly over-graded NGC coin submitted by Beverly Hills Coin Club member Thomas Clark. You be the judge. According to Tom and myself, this coin is only a VF 35. It doesn't even make XF 40 let alone an AU 53 as NGC claims. There is extensive wear (not flatness of strike) on the forehead, cheek, neck, shoulder and throughout all points of the hair. This is noted by not only the lack of detailed, but the dull, matted greying effect that extensive wear has. This is also noticeable on every single star, the date and lettering. I've seen this coin in person, and it does not have the luster of an XF, let alone an AU, even with overlapping toning taken into account. Although they tend to grade most of their coins accurately, NCG is a full 18 points off on this one. As the saying goes "Buy the coin, not the slab".
