Greysheet Not Always Up to Date

                        By Joe Anderson

The Coin Dealer’s Newsletter (the “Greysheet”) is the number one choice of pricing for many dealers.  It is issued every week and prices are updated as much as possible.  However, even a huge staff of editors cannot stay on all the price changes occurring in today’s active market.  With corporate stocks becoming more and more unreliable, investors are buying rare coins in droves, sending prices soaring.  Here are some examples of current prices paid at a recent R.M. Smythe Auction (established in 1880).  As one can see, most of the final bid prices (prices realized) were two to three times Greysheet prices.  I am pleased to be on the ACC/BHCC Value Guide Committee along with a fine team of other collectors to report auction results daily to bring more accurate and timely prices for RCM and the Value Guide Book that will be published by ACC/BHCC this November.
